cooking class // Paris edition

on our recent trip to Paris, Brian and i attended a small cooking class in the kitchen of acclaimed author and chef, Susan Herrmann Loomis. An American living in Paris for 30 years, Susan was an absolute delight!! we had an extraordinary time, chopping, whisking, baking and tasting an array of classic french dishes prepared by.... US!  in addition to the actual preparation, cooking and instruction, we enjoyed a salt tasting and a chocolate tasting! so interesting and delicious. i highly recommend this experience as it gives you a taste... literally... of authentic french food and hospitality, even though Susan is American by blood, she is oh so french at heart.  visit her website for details and information on classes and her blog for recipes:  On Rue Tatin

Brian prepared the rhubarb tarts

Brian's other task was to prepare the duck

i pitted the cherries and made the sauce that would accompany the duck

the beautiful duck and deliciously juicy cherries

that stove...

finished  duck, resting, rare

classic french appetizers... raw veggies, bread and butter, olive oil cookies, crisps made from the tart dough and sautéed mushrooms (which were my favorite... i ate them like potato chips!)

finished rhubarb tarts

finished duck with cherries

power

i hope your Easter was spectacular! a glorious celebration of the Savior!! i'll bet that looked different for each of us. i'm sure your idea of a grand and glorious celebration isn't identical to mine. or your mothers. or your friend's. while we're on the subject, what IS your idea of an appropriately awesome way to remember and celebrate the joy and victory we have through Jesus' death and resurrection? i know from extensive experience that churches everywhere each have their own ideas and interpretations of 'Easter Sunday'. some feel it's better to be solemn while others go 'all out' with special music, special guests, or elaborate productions. one isn't right and the other wrong. one isn't better, nor the other worse. just different. i figure as long as the true focus is JESUS and not all the hoo-hah it's all good. honoring God, making much of HIM is the point. if it's not, there isn't one.

this past weekend i had the privilege of partnering with a great group of people in Shreveport, Louisiana.  they had a fantastic plan in place! all day saturday there was a family Resurrection Celebration with rides and games, food and fun for young and old. there was a giant stage set up with a great big ol sound system, Curvine,  a great rapper, preformed and then i took the stage after that. there was talk of rain. and the rain indeed showed up. but it only caused minor delays early on and all of the tents that had already been set up provided shelter for anyone that wanted it. however, as i finished my 4th song, the sound guy motioned to me on the side of the stage and said...." i think you can squeeze in one more song before the storm". so we jumped to 'people get ready' and as i sang i could clearly see the black clouds creeping in with lightning and thunder to boot! several super-fans stayed where they were, but most sensed the closeness of the storm and within minutes bounce houses were deflated, tents taken down, and folks scurried to their cars or went inside the church. even while i was singing the volunteers were covering the giant stacks of speakers with tarps and trying to get the equipment inside. i finished and went back to the green room. no sooner did i sit down than i heard the storm. i mean HEARD the storm. rain...hail...wind...thunder. and everything went black. all the people that remained were ushered into the sanctuary. the emergency generator kicked on and we at least had some dimly lit spaces. this was a full-blown, real-life, honest-to-goodness tornado. Louisiana style. there were some heart-pounding moments of true fear. later as we drove back to the hotel (which also had no power...) we saw the results of the storm. roof tops ripped away, huge trees split down the middle, signs down, lights out. words don't really suffice in moments like that.

later that evening the worship team ( led by jeremiah woods) and i gathered to practice... and pray. the power had not yet fully returned to the church building, although for whatever reason we were able to have lights only in the nursery, so that's where we rehearsed. we went over the songs with acoustic guitars and hoped for electricity by morning.

morning came. still darkness. so, we made due. at 7:30 am, the first of 3 services, in a dark sanctuary, as ushers led people to their seats by flashlight, we worshipped. i mean WE WORSHIPPED!! with 5 acoustic guitars, 7 singers and no microphones we sang. and you know what? it was EPIC! yes there had been an enormous amount of hours, effort, and no doubt money spent in preparation for an 'all out' celebration. but for whatever reason, God saw fit to show HIS POWER through the lack of electrical power. it wasn't about the special guest (me), it wasn't about the cool video (that we eventually did see at the 3rd service and that WAS in fact great), it wasn't about the high-tech lights...it became about JESUS and Him alone! (Proverbs 16:9... we can make our plans, but The Lord determines our steps)

listen to me: i'm NOT saying had everything worked and gone according to plan that Jesus wouldn't have been the focus. from what i know about the people at Word of God, He absolutely was and would've been.  nor am i saying that Jesus wasn't the focus at churches around the country whose lights and cameras and videos worked perfectly and whose productions went off without a hitch. we'll never truly know this side of Heaven the why of it all. all i can know for certain is that we saw God move in POWER in spite of the lack of it. maybe it was for me? i certainly was able to think clearly about churches around the globe that meet on dirt floors with no electricity and praise Jesus with all their hearts. some that do it secretly and risk their lives to do so.

this Easter will go down in history as one of my favorites for sure. despite the changing of hotels, the added bonus of weather elsewhere that caused flight delays, which in turn caused missed flights, which in turn led to extra nights spent not at home etc..... it gave me time to think on Easter. it allowed me the chance to reevaluate my idea of a real celebration. and to see first hand Gods power on display in magnificent ways. it's so easy, in our current culture, to begin to rely on our technology, our production, our advanced abilities. but i would encourage us as a body... as THE body of Christ...to not let anything take the place of the simplicity of true, explicit worship of Jesus.

(below: i was able to watch www.freshlifechurch.com Good Friday service on my ipad. THEIR lights and production worked!!! and yes... Jesus was the focus!; this is a shot of our rehearsal in the nursery; this is the dark greenroom; a beautiful reminder of the reason we do what we do. this sign was on the green room door)

40

this past weekend i had the extreme honor of participating in the Re:Envision weekend at Harvest Christian Fellowship where we celebrated 40 years of ministry for Pastor Greg and Cathe Laurie.  now don't get confused... Harvest Crusades have been going strong for 24 years this year.  Harvest Christian Fellowship, the church Greg Laurie founded in Riverside, CA, is celebrating 40 years.  i first sang there in 1985, i think.  i was a teenager and the lead singer of country-rock-a-billy band Wild Blue Yonder.  we played out at Harvest on a summer Sunday night.

fast forward a few years, to 1989.  my husband and i were newlyweds, living out in Riverside County and attending Harvest.  my booking agent scheduled a sunday night/monday night gig for me at Harvest in Riverside and at Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa (where Wild Blue Yonder had also played several times).  and that was that.  i've been a part of the Harvest family ever since.

i'm overwhelmingly grateful to have been a part of what God has done in the lives of people all over the world through the ministry of Harvest and Greg.   it's part of my history now, and i can't imagine my life without it.  the relationships and friendships we've cultivated because of our involvement will continue on the rest of our lives, regardless of miles that may separate.

this past weekend was an incredible time of reflection as we looked back, through music and video.  but it also served as a catalyst for re:envisioning the future.  God has done much! but He wants to do more!  the same is true of each of our lives.  don't get caught up in, or hung up on, your past... good or bad.  rather, remember it,  learn from it, and let God do something else. something new.  what's next for you?

california girls

i've just arrived home from a week spent in and around my ol' stompin ground:  Orange County, CA.  i grew up in Anaheim... why, yes, i did spend half my life at Disneyland... and then, once married, lived in the cities of Orange and Newport Beach

i'm blessed to be able to travel and visit friends and family often. this time around, Izzi came along and we had the privilege of leading worship at 2 different churches.  it was an incredible time of fellowship, and i must say that while we came to give, we were given more

first, at Kingsfield Church in Aliso Viejo, we were so sweetly received and blessed by a congregation of Jesus loving people that worshiped LOUD and listened intently as Pastor Chris Norman brought a heart felt message on thriving through prayer. i left that place full, as God spoke and moved in my own head and heart

next, we were part of the women's ministry, Sisterhood, at Lakeshore City Church in Corona, CA. i can't begin to tell you the blessing those ladies were to us! Sisterhood indeed! we were completely spoiled and well taken care of as the ladies of Lakeshore took care of our every need... including giving both Izzi and i gorgeous gift 'baskets' full of thoughtful treats (they confessed to having 'stalked' our instagram and pinterest profiles to get ideas!!) i was truly inspired and challenged by the message that Louise Moulton taught out of Haggai and Ezra.  i hope to get the chance to minister along side her again!

the icing on the cake was the delightful day we were able to spend out in Palm Springs at the ACE hotel with photographer and friend Sammy Cosa. i've known Sammy for several years as he spent countless hours working on and managing my website for a season, as well as taking some photos in 06 (you may remember a certain extravagant pink skirt and cowboy boots) that remain some of my favorites to date.  i can't wait to share the photos with you.... soon

on thursday we met up with Propaganda and Peace.  Peace i've known for 25+ years! he is the rapper on my song 'I Now Live' from 'Remember'.  we go way back.  Propaganda is a new friend whose work i'm insanely inspired by!  he and Peace have partnered to remix a song for Izzi Ray that i really look forward to sharing with the world...

in addition, we spent some time connecting with precious friends and family, and have arrived home refreshed and inspired ... ready to write and work

can i be so bold as to ask for your partnership in prayer? as i head into the future seeking what God has next, i'd be grateful if you'd pray with and for me for guidance and direction.  i'll keep you posted!

opener extrordinaire

this past week something monumental happened.  my daughter, along with 4 of her friends (one being her brother), opened for Steven Curtis Chapman at our Northwest Montana County Fair.

ok, let me rephrase: there were a number of monumental things that happened this past week.

one: Steven Curtis Chapman BEING in Kalispell, Montana!  What?!!! it was amazing to have him in our area at our small town fair.

two: Izzi opening for him.  this had NOTHING to do with me folks! i did not arrange it.  this was by divine-design.

three: she killed it. as in, she was amazing. i promise you i am not being biased. just a music lover calling it like i see...or hear...it. the girl can write and play and sing.

four: i listened as my daughter declared the name of Jesus in front of her friends and family, neighbors and strangers. boldy. beautifully.   this was THE monumental milestone that took my breath away.

kentucky

i'm from Kentucky!  ok, more accurately, my father is from Kentucky.  having spent a good amount of time there throughout my childhood, i feel as though it's kind of like my home-town-away-from-home.

the Kentucky Horse Park is a beautiful place to visit and horse-lovers from all over the world visit to catch a glimpse of retired celebrity race horses, unique breeds from around the world as well as see serious horse-shows.  we've been a few times and it remains one of my favorite destinations!

here are some snap shots of our time there...

we had the chance to visit a handful of private horse farms where we saw at least a dozen colts and fillies as well as their million dollar mama's!  we also got to see behind the scenes at Keeneland racetrack, a most amazing experience for a horse-lover!!

Dove Awards

this past week i had the extreme joy and privilege of performing on the 43rd Annual Dove Awards.  it's been a few years since i've participated, and while there were many changes, there were also a lot of things that seemed to have stayed the same.  for instance, in years past, the awards show has always been held in Nashville, TN as the finale to GMA week.  however, this year, as well as last, the awards were held in Atlanta, GA in the FOX Theatre, a beautiful, historic venue that,  i felt, brought an extra level of credibility to our event.  there were also a lot of new faces, both behind the scenes as well as in front of the camera, which made for fun new friendships (for both izzi and me!).  as for things that hadn't changed... it was an exceptionally beautiful time to reconnect with friends and colleagues that i haven't seen in while.  the evening was more like a family gathering than an awards show. it was clear that while we were there to honor one another, we were also there to reiterate to the world our united message of hope, peace and love in Jesus!

pursuing the light

my daughter izzi and i recently had the opportunity to be a part of a fantastic ministry called, 'pursuing the light'. it was a weekend retreat for young ladies, ages 16-20, who have a passion for photography.  it was truly a blessing as izzi happens to be interested in photography! iz led us all in worship and i spoke. what a precious time of friendship! we met what i'm sure will be life long friends and had the chance to invest in the lives of some beautiful young women! photographers Katie Campbell, Kristin Wall and Jody Gray each spoke and taught. here are some photos from our weekend, as well as my teaching on comparison vs confidence...

   comparison vs confidence
 .   .   .   .   .   .   .   .   .   .   .

 the importance of being y o u
1 :: c o m p a r i s o n
we’ve all thought it. we’ve all done it. “how do i measure up?” we get an idea in our brain as to what we think is cool, pretty, right, best, etc {it’s called having an opinion} and we compare ourselves (our work, our faces, our bodies, our clothes...) to this picture we now have in our heads. and at first glance, this isn’t such a bad thing. i mean, inspiration comes often times from another’s work or look. individuality is developed as we form opinions and decide what we do, and don’t, like. it’s part of becoming who we are.  the problem comes when we allow the picture in our mind to overshadow the reality of who we are. when we start to think that all the other stuff we see is better than what we see in the mirror. according to scripture, we are each unique, special, distinct.
Psalm 139:13-18
You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed.
How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
    They cannot be numbered!
I can’t even count them;
they outnumber the grains of sand!
And when I wake up,
    you are still with me!
we can so easily get caught up in the negatives of comparison...what we’re not, what we don’t have, what we can’t do...and let that dictate our behavior.
in Matthew 20, Jesus tells a parable of a land owner:
“For the Kingdom of Heaven is like the landowner who went out early one morning to hire workers for his vineyard.  He agreed to pay the normal daily wage and sent them out to work.
“At nine o’clock in the morning he was passing through the marketplace and saw some people standing around doing nothing.  So he hired them, telling them he would pay them whatever was right at the end of the day. So they went to work in the vineyard. At noon and again at three o’clock he did the same thing.
“At five o’clock that afternoon he was in town again and saw some more people standing around. He asked them, ‘Why haven’t you been working today?’
“They replied, ‘Because no one hired us.’
“The landowner told them, ‘Then go out and join the others in my vineyard.’
“That evening he told the foreman to call the workers in and pay them, beginning with the last workers first.  When those hired at five o’clock were paid, each received a full day’s wage. When those hired first came to get their pay, they assumed they would receive more. But they, too, were paid a day’s wage.  When they received their pay, they protested to the owner,  ‘Those people worked only one hour, and yet you’ve paid them just as much as you paid us who worked all day in the scorching heat.’
“He answered one of them, ‘Friend, I haven’t been unfair! Didn’t you agree to work all day for the usual wage?  Take your money and go. I wanted to pay this last worker the same as you.  Is it against the law for me to do what I want with my money? Should you be jealous because I am kind to others?’
“So those who are last now will be first then, and those who are first will be last.”
i love Warren Wiersbe’s commentary on this:
‘the key to the parable is that the first workers hired demanded a contract and insisted on knowing how much they would get. the other workers trusted the landowner. if you ask God for a contract, you will only rob yourself, for He is generous with His workers. be faithful to do your job and avoid watching the other workers, and He will deal with you generously.’
the truth is we are HIS. HE made us. we are truly the clay and HE is the potter.  it’s HIS prerogative to give us, make us and use us as HE see’s fit.
and yet, i can’t tell you how many hours i’ve wasted worrying about what someone else got (special privileges,  positions, publicity, promotions) and what i felt like i deserved.  that is called jealousy. and here is what the Bible has to say about it:
proverbs 14:30
A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body;
jealousy is like cancer in the bones.
do you see the contrast? peace equals health...in other words being content and trusting the Lord. jealousy destroys. kills.
and James 3:14-16
But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.
whoa. that’s not what i want, it’s not what i thought i was doing. but it is EXACTLY what happens when we allow our thoughts to form patterns.  the old saying is true...
“watch your thoughts for they become words, watch your words for they become actions, watch your actions for they become habits, watch your habits for they become your character, watch your character for it becomes your destiny.”
the Bible says it better... out of the abundance of the heart...the mouth speaks. (Matthew 12:34)
what goes on in our hearts and heads...comes out of our mouths, through our attitudes, and ultimately through our actions.
the good news is that while there are clear reasons as to why we are prone to think this way,  there are clear solutions that will cure us, bringing hope, healing and straight-up happiness to our hearts.
first, we have to address the problem:
the enemy.
the Bible says that the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking who he may devour.              (1 Peter 5:8)
and John 10:10 says the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy.
we have a real and immediate danger wanting nothing more than our ultimate destruction. if he can trip us up with subtleties, he will. by whatever means necessary he seeks our demise.  the crazy thing is he doesn’t really use new methods. he just figures out what works, then continually applies the same methods. and like idiots, we fall for it. again and again.
i’m going to give you 3 things that you can do to combat the attacks of the enemy. 3 weapons.
BE AWARE :: our first line of defense is awareness. realizing there is an imminent threat. a ‘great’ enemy, says 1 Peter 5:8. a capable adversary. a bad-to-the-bone-villain. we need to know our weaknesses, where the chinks in our armor are. take a minute and jot down what you know in your heart to be that achilles heel, the vulnerability that typically trips you up.  i don’t mean what you see as your flaws...where you fall short...no. i mean areas in your heart where you know the enemy has it easy.
BE ALERT :: that same passage also says ‘STAY ALERT’! now that you’re aware of your weaknesses, you need to be prepared. i love this definition of alert: wide-awake, swift; agile; nimble; an attitude of vigilance, readiness or caution, as before an expected attack.  this is our hard-core-super-hero to the bad-to-the-bone-villain.
i will admit here, that most of my thoughts, decisions, actions and moves are first funneled through what i like to call, the ALIAS filter.  i love action. my husband will go romantic comedy all day long. no. give me indiana jones, gladiator. the bourne movies. and i love none as much as ALIAS. and Wonder Woman. i think as a kid i developed this sense of strength and power through imagination and it just never went away.  so when it comes to spiritual warfare...i’m all over it. i love the imagery of hero vs villain. and since i completely believe that every word of the Bible is true, it’s easier for me to visualize this spiritual battle raging for my soul.  i need to be on guard. anticipating the inevitable attack on my mind. as soon as we let our guard down, those weaknesses become liabilities. they expose us to the arrows of the enemy, giving him a clear shot.
i assume that for most of you, there are a couple things that the enemy has been whispering in your ear even over the last few minutes. or maybe leading up to this trip.  and maybe you’ve spent time agreeing with him. you’ve heard his lies so often you’ve begun to believe them. stop giving him ground. quit letting him win. the Bible says:
greater is HE that is in you than he that is in the world   (1 John 4:4) this is TRUTH!!
BE ACTIVE :: in order to defeat the enemy and gain victory we need a game plan. we must actively pursue that victory. we can’t sit around and hope it’ll just happen. that’s called complacency, and growth is stunted by it. in other words... it doesn’t happen. we do not want to be like the dumb guy in the parable Jesus told about the master who gave 3 different servants different amounts of money. 2 of the guys invested it and made a bunch more, while the 3rd guy buried his. buried it. sat there and waited for the master to return. and when he did return, he took the dumb guys money and gave it to the one who’d risked the most, invested the most, made the most. so we too have to risk and DO and pursue.  how can we BE ACTIVE?
1. believe
do you believe God is who he says he is or not?!  in Hebrews 11 the Bible says that faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. and it says that without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must BELIEVE that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. we have no chance of survival unless we first BELIEVE
2. resist
James 4:7 says ‘resist the devil and he will flee from you’.  he has undoubtedly used little bits of truth as bait to lead you into a lonely place, a depressed place, an inadequate place, a fearful place... i know i’ve followed those crumbs before and i’ve found myself in darkness and tears. all because i veered from the path of truth into the woods of lies. Philippians 4:8 says ‘fix your thoughts on whatever is true...’. don’t let the half-truths blind you. pull away and again i say stop giving him ground. quit letting him win. you have the power of the Holy Spirit...HE is bigger. HE is stronger. RESIST, hold your ground.
3. read and pray
‘the Word of God is alive and powerful, sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword’ (Hebrews 4:12) it is our most effective weapon. Ephesians 6 talks about the armor of God. every piece of armor mentioned is for our protection...except the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. THAT is meant for defense, for fighting back! for doing damage!! read it, learn it, memorize it, use it. hide it in your heart so that when the enemy attacks you can swing that sucker and strike!
and pray. also in Ephesians 6 Paul says...’ Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.’  James 5:16 says..’The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.’

2 :: c o n f i d e n c e
where comparison (conceit and jealousy) tears you down,                 confidence builds you up
where comparison fills you with fear, confidence gives you courage
where comparison makes you feel inadequate,                                 confidence makes you feel capable
when you are your true God-made, special, unique self...there is NO competition. Jeremiah 1 says that God knew you before he formed you in your mothers womb. and in Isaiah 43 He says ‘...But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you. O Israel, the one who formed you says,“Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine.  the difference between conceited and confident is the fact that when you’re conceited you’re full of yourself, proud, self-absorbed, and have a quite favorable opinion of your own abilities. when you’re confident you’re full of the Spirit, aware of and dependent  on Christ’s power and enablement, secure in HIS love.
{homework}
look up and write down a handful of verses that speak directly to your weaknesses. for instance, i’ve struggled with fear most of my life...which the enemy continues to love to use to get me to feel inadequate for my job... so i memorized 2 timothy 1:7...for God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
